Frequently Asked Questions
Does the net simply lay over the hay or is it tightened somehow? When first installing the Texas Haynet you open the draw string wide to accomodate the size of the bale. Once the Texas Haynet is over the bale and the hay ring is in place, you tighten the drawstring at the bottom to secure the Texas Haynet in place. You then have to option of attaching or tying the tightened drawstring to the bottom of your hayring to secure the Texas Haynet in place.
How will my horse react to the net?
At first, your horse may be mad at the net for making him work for his hay! After a day or two, most horses will stop trying to bite through the net and will settle down to pulling it out with their teeth or their lips.
Do I need to keep tension on the net?
No, as the hay is eaten down, the body of the net becomes looser and looser...the horse handles this very well by moving the net around and searching for the hay.
Will the horse bite through the net? Occasionally an equine will bite through the net, but usually not until the UV protection wears off and the weather and elements break down the threads in the netting...(depending upon your local conditions this may occur after 2 years) They will not ingest the net, just break the thread. If this should happen, take any baling twine or small cord and simply close the hole. This does not happen very often, but it can, on occasion , so you need to check your Texas Hay Net periodically.

Is it suitable for all my livestock?
Yes, the Texas Hay Net is suitable for all grass eating, or grazing, livestock like cattle, llama, alpaca, sheep or goats, provided they do not have horns.
How long will a Texas Hay Net last?
Depending upon your local conditions and your livestock's eating habits, Texas Hay Nets have an added UV inhibitor and hold up very well to adverse conditions. In the unlikely event that holes should arise, simply mend or tie them closed using common rope or baling twine. Most Texas Hay Nets used under normal conditions retain their structural integrity for a minimum of 2 years.
Are Texas Hay Nets guaranteed? If you are not satisfied with your Texas Hay Net, it may be returned for a full refund (less shipping) at anytime in the first 90 days with proof of purchase.

What type of hay ring should I use?

Alternative options for Texas Hay Net Installation
It is recommended that hay rings be solid at the bottom for shod animals to prevent the horse from hooking their shoe in the net. Unshod animals do not run this risk and any hay ring may be utilized.
Besides Hay Rings, are there other options?
Use of the Texas Hay Net is only limited by your imagination!
We have customers who have opted to build special enclosures for their Texas Hay Net and other chose a simpler design to use like PVC pipe around the perimeter instead of a drawstring. One "innovative" customer basically makes a big hula hoop from PVC pipe. It makes it easy for them to center and install the (net see pictures above). The PVC hoop must be tied off to the legs of the ring to prevent the horses from "lifting" it, but this unique installation system works pretty darn good.
Feel free to experiment with different ways of using it. We just ask that you keep safety in mind and install it in such a way that shod horses are not likely to get their shoes hung up in it. Email us your photo's of your alternative installation ideas and we'll post it!
